Vallée Blanche Traverse – Chamonix – June 2014
Day 2: We took the first Aiguille du Midi cable car to do the down hill version of the Vallée Blanche Traverse (AdM to Helbronner). The Snow Ridge from the Aiguille du Midi station down to the Vallée Blanche glacier is most impressive and really quite excitingly steep on both sides.
Towards the Helbronner end of the traverse are some very interesting crevasses to weave your way between.
You can hire a local guide for this trip from the local guides office, but it’s relatively easy for anyone with roped glacier crossing experience.
Day 4: As our plan to go up the Argentière Glacier was scuppered by the lift not running, we decided to return to do the up-hill version of the Vallée Blanche Traverse by taking the AdM cable car then the cable car across to Helbronner and setting off back from there. We also stopped in at the Refuge des Cosmiques on route for lunch. The final ascent of the AdM snow ridge became rather interesting as a blizzard closed in on us.
