  • Chris Pearson says...
  • On foot from Anne Riggs through Torver to minor road to NW. Used small pedestrian gate to gain "Private" track to High Stile farm but left it for access land -up to summit.Return same way. The (now defunct) 8.5 mile long Coniston-Broughton railway ran close by. Opened in 1859, closed in 1962 it was used to take copper and slate to Broughton and then to bring tourists. In the summer of 1939 a direct train was introduced from Blackpool Central to Coniston. The "Fleetwood Boat Train" had a connection with the steamer service between Fleetwood and Barrow. Towards the end of the First World War workmen's trains ran between Coniston and the shipyards at Barrow.
