  • Chris Pearson says...
  • 2/4/15 Silecroft to Bootle on a rare calm sunny day with L & Darren. The nearby railway carried / carries nuclear reprocessing flask to Sellafield. In 1945 a goods train carrying 52 depth charges exploded violently south of Bootle station creating a hole 50 feet deep. The crew had performed heroics when noticing the wagon on fire(a spark from the engine?) They got the train clear of the station and uncoupled those wagons on fire. The guard went ahead to lay detonators to warn oncoming trains whilst the driver went back to fight the fire when the massive explosion happened killing him and shattering windows back at Bootle station and village. Today the level crossing gates at the station are still opened and closed by hand by a signalman.
