  • Chris Pearson says...
  • A good track to walk up and jog down on a gloomy morning with a hint of wetness in the air. Many high voltage electricity pylons march across the moors here (including one power line that comes through the disused Woodhead rail tunnel) coming together down at Stalybridge electricity substation which serves Manchester. On the outbreak of the American Civil War in 1861, the Stalybridge cotton mills rapidly ran short of cotton. Thousands of operatives were laid off. with only five of the town's 39 factories employing people full-time. At one point three-quarters of Stalybridge workers were dependent on relief schemes. A thousand skilled men and women left the town, in what became known as "The Panic".
