• Pointy and easy. Although not so easy on our ascent in a gale force wind and on the slippery polished summit limestone, where we had to “crab” along. Thorpe Cloud is an isolated limestone hill (a reef knoll) formed @ 360 million years ago, from the fossilised remains of sea creatures and corals under a shallow tropical sea. The name "cloud" is a derivation of the Old English word clud which means "hill". 1 million people a year visit Dovedale with over 7000 were once counted on a Sunday in August. A rare double sunset can be seen against Thorpe Cloud event when viewed from the top of nearby Lin Dale on and around the summer solstice. The sun sets on the summit of the hill, partially reappears from its steep northern slope and sets for a second and final time shortly afterwards.]
