- FP from the north down fields crossing the M20 then alongside the HS1 Eurostar railway. Impressive woosh as a couple of trains hurtled past in a blur, just a fence away. Tried to rush to beat encroaching darkness, not easy with a cold. Went along the summit ridge over the relocated top to visit the surprisingly large and grand mausoleum – built by the Earls of Darnley when their traditional Westminster Abbey vault became full. the 3rd Earl, specified a square stone building with a 'prominent pyramid' surrounded by a dry moat - cost of £9,000 (well over £1 million in today’s prices). For reasons that remain unclear, possibly involving a dispute with the Bishop of Rochester, it was never consecrated, so was never used for burial. The mausoleum increasingly became the target of vandals, whose attacks climaxed on 5 November 1980 when a tremendous blaze in the crypt brought down the floor of the chapel, damaged and blackened much of the interior and destroyed the elegant outer staircase. £5m from the Heritage Lottery Fund was obtained for renovation and now cared for (fenced off) by NT
