- Top is brambly bit just north of path along wooded top from housing to west. Ratley Hill lies on The Hoo Peninsula, surrounded by the North Kent marshes SSSI. Much of the peninsula lies in one of the Saxon divisions of England called "hundreds": here it is the "Hundred of Hoo". William the Conqueror granted his half-brother, Odo, the large estate of Hoo. The tall chimney nearby is Kingsnorth power station. It opened in 1967 and burned coal or oil according to the economics of each. Location chosen due to proximity to London(who wanted the electricity), the availability of cooling water from the River Medway, and deep-water berthing for oil tankers and colliers. In 1987 Greenpeace scaled the chimney abseiled down and painted Gordon on the side (should have said Gordon bin it) as a protest against fossil fuel pollution and the damage caused by climate change -upheld later in court as grounds for a rightful protest. Professor Jim Hansen, one of the world's leading climate scientists, said that the 20,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emitted daily by Kingsnorth could be responsible for the extinction of up to 400 species. Kingsnorth Power Station closed in 2013 after it was deemed too polluting under EU law. by 2016 the whole plant, including the 198m chimney, is due to be demolished.
