Easy trig in open on golf course from the ROW. The location is just north of East Sutton Open prison for women where gardening is seen as a way of rehabilitating people back into the community. The grade-II listed Elizabethan mansion, a family home until the prison service took over in 1946, sits in 65 acres of high-maintenance grounds, of which five acres are given over to growing vegetables for the prison kitchens and farm shop, as well as plants to sell. A prison work detail might be cutting lawns, pruning shrubs or pricking out leek seedlings, as well as the more universal cooking and cleaning. Inmates also help look after a small beef herd, and pigs (which keep the shop supplied with sausages) and a livery yard for retired horses. The Telegraph ran article on the work called “Growing Straight”.
